Make Them Birds Fly is the second episode of the the first season of Snowfall. It is the second episode overall.
Outline
Franklin struggles with the reality of his new enterprise. Teddy's distrust of Alejandro escalates. Gustavo confronts his new partners.
Summary[]
Prologue[]
As the show opens, we see Franklin separating the extra 4K from the 12K he needed to provide Avi. Teddy awakens and ponders whose earring he found. Gustavo is doing what appears to be a repair job underneath his pickup, while Pedro and Lucia are waiting for him at the rendezvous point.
Franklin[]
Franklin is at the bus stop waiting for the bus when he sees someone pull up on a blue Honda motorcycle and enter the grocery store. Knowing he was able to acquire an extra $4000 on the drug deal with Claudia, Franklin enters the same store the motorcyclist entered to buy the bike. Franklin is now the proud owner of a Honda motorcycle.
Teddy[]
Teddy is in the kitchen washing his face when Alejandro enters the home. Teddy outright tells him they have to relocate to another stash house and must do so after the meeting on that night while loading some kilos in a bag. Though Alejandro doesn't like the sound of that, he recommends Teddy having a bump. Teddy declines, requests Alejandro to bag the other kilos, and takes off with the bag he loaded while requesting Alejandro meet him within the hour.
Gustavo[]
El Oso arrives at the rendezvous with Pedro and Lucia waiting under the bridge. Gustavo approaches them with a bag in hand. Pedro tells Gustavo he's late and asks for the money. Gustavo throw him a bag consisting of a family portrait. Irritated, Pedro demands to know where the money is at, El Oso states he'll hand over the money once he feels safe, knowing the house he broke into belonged to his father, Ramiro Nava. When Lucia attempts to explain the situation to Gustavo, Pedro pulls out a gun and loses his patience with Gustavo. Lucia attempts to calm down Pedro, knowing Gustavo knows where the money is. She was finally able to prevent Pedro from doing anything rash and orders him to drive off, which he does.
Teddy[]
Alejandro arrives at the rendezvous point to pick up Teddy to meet Avi at his home. They see him snorting a line and fixing a glass of scotch while preaching about how he hates using phones to set up deals. There is a commotion in the house and Avi orders one of his guards to see what the fuss was all about. He then pulls out his gold plated gun and orders Teddy and Alejandro to strip, explaining how nervous Teddy looks, whlie explaining he wants to check them for wires. He even orders his men to strip down while stripping himself as well. Yuda appears in the backyard experiencing health problems, mainly from the gunshot bruise. He then orders Teddy and Alejandro to leave his house, postponing their deal.
Gustavo[]
El Oso and Lucia are at the gym where he clipped up a punching bag and asked Lucia in Spanish who he killed in the home invasion. Lucia explains it was a guard named Max, one of Ramiro's men. Gustavo then asks if she and Pedro set him up and why Pedro would want to rob his father. Lucia then explains the plan to borrow it, flip the product, and return it unnoticed. She then tells El Oso about the operation she and Pedro were setting up. The gym coach then order Gustavo back into training, but Lucia suggests to Gustavo to quit, and throws in a suggestion to work with her and Pedro and bring the money and maybe he'll be able to buy the gym he's at.
Franklin[]
Franklin arrives at Avi's home where he, Muir, and his henchmen attempting to resuscitate Yuda, who was experiencing health problems. He informs Avi he has his money and requests to take a few more keys, stating he found some opportunity in South Central. Avi agrees but on the condition that Franklin gets Yuda to the hospital. He takes Avi's Rolls Royce, then rides up to the front entrance of the hospital where he drops off Yuda, then makes a hasty getaway while the paramedics attempt to aid Yuda.
Teddy[]
Teddy and Alejandro returned to the parking lot they met at. Alejandro chastises Teddy for possibly blowing the deal with Avi, claiming he had it under control. Teddy then pulls out an earring he found in the house. Alejandro denies knowing anything about the earring, but Teddy doesn't buy it. Teddy confronts Alejandro for lying about him and Logan being alone when Logan OD'd, and believes there was a woman or a bunch of women present. Alejandro believed at that point that Teddy was accusing him of killing some lady. He then reminds Teddy that there is a pending deal with the Villanueva's on that night and tells him to get his act straight or leave.
Franklin[]
Franklin collects a few more kilos from Avi, who is curious know who bought the last kilo. Franklin sarcastically says it was his fairy godmother and rides off. He later arrives at Jerome's place to check on his Aunt Louie. Jerome is furious about his woman having a bruise on her face from the drug deal with Claudia. When Jerome pointed out the mess he brought to his front porch, Louie lashes out at Jerome and brings up the woman who banged on their screen door. As they argue, Franklin sees his mother outside their house. He freaks out and asks Jerome to watch the merchandise in his bag, to which Jerome refuses. Cissy enters the house and reminds her son that he needs to help evict a tenant. When she asks Jerome where Louie is at, he lies and tells Cissy she is not feeling well. Cissy then brings up the motorcycle in the driveway, calling it 'death on two wheels', unaware it belongs to Franklin. She and Franklin depart. At the apartments, Franklin and Cissy are clearing out the apartment of a woman named Doris Perkins, who is being evicted for failing to pay her rent. Doris, of course, berates Cissy about having her son help her evict her from her apartment. When Cissy points out to Doris that it's a lesson for not paying the rent, Doris makes a lewd gesture to Franklin. Cissy then demands Doris to act right, on threat of contacting the sheriff's department. She then suspects a possible scheme and re-enters Doris's apartment with Franklin following in tow. Cissy then orders Franklin to open a grate to the heating duct in the kitchen and he discovers a chicken milk bomb, a glass jar containing milk and raw chicken, which could make the apartment uninhabitable. Cissy's boss, Arnold Tulfowitz, arrives at the complex. He greets both Cissy and Franklin, though Franklin is not too fond of Tulf laying a hand on Cissy. When Doris calls out to Tulf, he orders her to vacate. Doris then goes down a list of complaints about the apartment and further insults him. She then tosses the chicken milk bomb at Tulfs car. Tulf loses it and snaps at her with Cissy trying to hold him back and get him into his car while much of the apartment residency spews out insults in Tulfs direction. Cissy attempts to take order and demands every back in their homes.
Gustavo[]
While Lucia is sitting in the pickup, Gustavo is underneath his pickup truck pulling out the money from underneath, which explains the repair job he did at the start of the episode. Satisfaction encompasses Lucia's face as she picks up the cash.
Teddy[]
Teddy is on the phone requesting a new place with an outside line while looking at a photo with him and his son, Paul in it.
Franklin[]
Franklin is at home with his mother talking about Mrs. Perkins tossing that chicken milk bomb at Tulfs car. When Franklin told his mother he wished it destroyed his window, Cissy reminded him that Tulf writes her paychecks. She then brings up how she felt about Franklin being over at Jerome and Louie's place. Franklin heads to his bedroom but realizes he doesn't have his bag. Cissy brings Franklin his bag, and before she could ask Franklin what he has in there, she discovers dirty dishes in his bedroom and collects them. Franklin lies to his mother about books and other stuff in his bag. He then tells a truth to Cissy about seeing his father on Western the night before, but didn't have much to say.
Teddy[]
Gustavo and Lucia are outside Alejandro and Teddy's place. When Alejandro answers the comm, Lucia responds back. The gate opens for them and they enter. Alejandro brings up Lucia bringing El Oso along and Lucia tells him she trusts Gustavo. When Lucia asked for Logan's whereabouts, Alejandro told her the truth about how he OD'd. Teddy enters the living room and introduces himself as Reed Thompson. Lucia was not fond of seeing someone she didn't know since Logan never told her about him. Teddy claimed to be a silent partner, and also brings up he was expecting a guy named Pedro. He also gives Lucia 'his condolences' for Logan's loss. Lucia is already annoyed by Reed and wants to get on with the deal right away. Alejandro places two duffel bags of the kilos on the coffee table and Gustavo sets the bag of money there as well. The transaction goes down as planned. As Lucia and Gustavo leave with the product, Alejandro opens the bag and collects the money. Teddy then informs Alejandro about the place he found near Hawthorne's and states that he will be collecting the other half. Alejandro then freaks out about Teddy going to Avi's place... alone.
Gustavo[]
El Oso and Lucia arrive at a storefront church where a song service is taking place. They enter through a back room and approach a house behind the storefront. Inside the house are a group of ladies waiting on them. Lucia then has the women follow her through a closet door leading into the lab with Gustavo in tow and orders them to strip down to their underwear. The female workers are cutting up and bagging the cocaine while Lucia brings up where a lot of the profit is going to. Pedro arrives and Lucia asks where he went to. Pedro tells about how he was trying to keep his father calm, based on the events of what happened at his fathers house. Pedro then informs Lucia that she needs to return with him for a meeting was called. When Pedro ordered the ladies to stop working, Lucia told the ladies to stay the course and left Gustavo to watch them.
Teddy[]
Teddy returns to Avi's home where he is bowling and using unopened champagne bottles as bowling pins. Avi celebrates and soon after, sees Teddy in his house. When Avi asks if Teddy's there to apologize or says he's legit, Teddy instead extends his hand out, whereas Avi agrees to shake, only to hear Teddy state they will not be doing business together. Avi stops him right then and there, and Teddy states he is a simple, reasonable man who would rather work with people of the same kin while telling Avi he's a lunatic. Avi claimed Teddy was making him nervous, and Teddy reminded Avi that he pulled a gun on him and forced him to strip. Teddy then suggested that sitting down and talking things through is the only way to build trust in case someone gets nervous. Teddy right then and there suggests they sit down, have a drink, and talk business.
Franklin[]
As Franklin is walking down the street, Melody spots him outside a burger joint. When they return to the neighborhood, Melody tell Franklin he can hang out at her place anytime. He did bring up being inside a house with her father there, proclaiming he went psycho when she went fine. Melody took that as a compliment, especially knowing he's selling weed. Franklin on the other hands denies that while Melody unzips his backpack, causing the kilos to drop out. When Melody asks what those bricks were, Franklin just tells Melody to go home. Franklin arrives at his Aunt and Uncles home where they're both asleep. He collects his motorcycle and rides off.
Lucia[]
Mauricio and Ramiro wait anxiously for Lucia and Pedro's arrival. They greet their parents, however, Ramiro is not interested in a family bonding. In a living-room filled with Villanueva associates, Ramiro talks about how he never been betrayal over the past 21 years in this business, until he brought up the money that was stolen from his home. He brought up Pedro suggesting that Max, the man Gustavo killed in the home invasion, was plotting to rob him with a friend, only to wind up being betrayed and killed. He then brought in the corpse of Max's brother, Javier, who was beaten to death after not being able to provide any answers. Ramiro throws out an ultimatum; if his money isn't returned in a week's time, everybody would be investigated. Lucia then talks about mess with her father involving Max and Ramiro's action. She then asks about his well-being. Mauricio brings up how he's too skinny and needs to eat more. He then suggests to Lucia to stop at the ranch and have dinner. After Mauricio drives off, Lucia talks to Pedro about his father dragging Javier's corpse in the house and states they need to immediately get the coke business going, but slowly. Pedro then tell Lucia that Ramiro's hell bent on finding the thief and does not want to wait around for him to kill them both.
Franklin[]
At Claudia's nightclub, Franklin carries out another deal with Claudia while Santos once again tastes the product, confirming the coke to be good. Claudia orders Santos to fetch $30,000 for the 2 kilos, but Franklin reminds Claudia that it's 16K per kilo. Claudia attempts to haggle and offer other services to him, but Franklin turns that down, so Claudia obliges Franklin with the rest of the cash. Claudia then asks Franklin how his Aunt Louie is doing, at which Franklin reminds her of the fact that she pistol-whipped her and held him at gunpoint. She then cuts of the conversation with Franklin and approaches two guys, Lenny and Ray-Ray. Franklin doesn't know what the conversation was about but she returns shortly and Santos brings Franklin the cash. After leaving the club with a backpack full of cash, he jumps on his bike and sees a vehicle pull up behind him. He sees the guy exit and it's Lenny from club. He distracts Franklin long enough for Ray-Ray to jump him. They both beat him until they pull the bag from him. Lenny then draws his gun and presses the barrel in Franklin's face. Ray-Ray tells Lenny to put his gun away as they already got the bag. Ray-Ray steals Franklin's motorcycle as well as the bag of cash and Lenny hops back into his car and they both drive off leaving Franklin injured on the ground.
