Mauricio Villanueva is the patriarch of the Villanueva Cartel up until his death near the end of Season 1.
Biography[]
At the beginning of the series, his health is already declining and he has allowed his ruthless brother-in-law, Ramiro Nava, to run things in his stead, even though damage could be done within the Cartel. He was born and raised in Mexico and made a home in the United States. Most of his operations stem from his ranch in Sinaloa to the streets of LA. When he passed away, Ramiro took the reigns of the Cartel.
Legacy[]
It is not clear what kind of character he possessed during his tenure as the Don of the Villanueva Cartel, but he was never merciless like Ramiro, however, he held a strict standard of growing the product in Mexico and smuggling it across the border. It is clearly unknown why he would turn over the business to his brother-in-law, but not to his daughter, Lucia, yet he showed some respect and expressed some wisdom to her in his final days.
